India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several areas of Maharashtra, Kerala, and Konkan Goa on July 16. Due to the severe rain today, the weather service has issued a red alert in certain areas.

IMD stated that isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat region, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka on July 16. IMD has issued a red alert for isolated areas in Konkan, Goa, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Saurashtra & Kutch, and Madhya Maharashtra in anticipation of the severe weather conditions.

Over the next four to five days, the IMD also predicts increased monsoon activity in the Peninsula and surrounding central India, highlighting the possibility of extensive weather effects over these areas.

"The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi," IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar told ANI.

Delhi weather

Delhi can expect mostly cloudy skies with light rain on Tuesday, the weather department said. Temperatures are forecasted to range from 25 to 36 degrees Celsius.

The weather prediction indicates that mild to moderate rainfall will persist in certain areas of Delhi NCR for the next six days. The sporadic downpour is probably going to make commuters' lives more difficult and create traffic jams.

On Monday morning, several areas in the national capital received rainfall, while the highest temperature recorded was 35.2 degrees Celsius.

Maharashtra weather

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai, Maharashtra is bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall today.

  • Certain areas in North Konkan districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated in South Konkan-Goa districts as well.
  • In the Ghat areas of North Madhya Maharashtra, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted, including isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall.
  • The Ghat areas of South Madhya Maharashtra may also experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places.
  • In Marathwada districts, isolated locations could see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.
  • Residents in these regions are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions due to the expected weather conditions.

Due to rising water levels, the Kamwari River in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi region of Thane overflowed, allowing water to seep into the homes of individuals who lived along the coast. The Sultania Gali neighbourhood saw knee-deep water fill the villages, forcing dozens of people to flee their houses.

 Karnataka weather

As a result of the ongoing, heavy rains in several Karnataka regions, the IMD reiterated its red alert for the state's southern interior and coastal regions on July 16. Life was severely affected on July 15 by the downpour, especially in the regions of Uttara Kannada and Kodagu.

Several villages in the Karwar taluk of Uttara Kannada, including Araga, Chendia, Iduru, and Toduru, have been impacted by floods brought on by the severe rainfall. The issue was made worse by the building of a four-lane national highway and barriers at the Kadamba naval facility, which caused the neighbouring communities to flood.

Kerala weather

The meteorological service in Kerala issued an orange notice for the districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, and a red alert for the districts of Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
