Digital payment systems across India experienced a significant disruption on Saturday as UPI services went down, impacting millions of users and various apps. Users of platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and bank UPI services reported transaction failures and login issues from early morning, sparking widespread concern.
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) users, on Saturday, encountered failures in transactions, delays in payment confirmations, and intermittent downtimes across multiple platforms. The problem seemed to be widespread and not limited to a single bank or app.
The disruptions began early morning, peaking around 8 am. Many users took to social media platforms such as X, expressing their frustration over failed transactions and their inability to complete even small routine payments.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI), shortly after, released a statement stating that it is are working to resolve the issue. "NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused," it said in a post on microblogging site X.
Platforms affected included:- PhonePe: Thousands of users reported being unable to send or receive money.
- Google Pay: Widespread reports of transaction failures and app timeouts were noted.
- Paytm: Although less affected, some users experienced intermittent transaction errors.
- HDFC Bank: Scheduled maintenance from 2:30 AM to 6:30 AM resulted in temporary UPI downtime.
- Kotak Mahindra Bank: Maintenance from 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM disrupted multiple services, including UPI and net banking.
