Tomato prices surged to Rs 100 per kg in retail markets of the national capital on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions affecting supply chains across the country. At Mother Dairy's Safal outlets in Delhi, tomatoes are being sold at this elevated price.
Data from the Department of Consumer Affairs reveals that retail prices of tomatoes in Delhi are at Rs 93 per kg as of July 20. The all-India average price for tomatoes on this date stands at Rs 73.76 per kg.
A senior official from the department attributed the sharp rise in prices to supply disruptions caused by extreme heat followed by excessive rainfall. "Prices of tomato, potato, and onion are high in Delhi and some other cities. Extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall disrupted supplies, causing a spike in prices in consuming areas," the official told PTI.
At a Mother Dairy store in West Delhi, onions are priced at Rs 46.90 per kg and potatoes at Rs 41.90 per kg. According to government data, onions are Rs 50 per kg and potatoes Rs 40 per kg in Delhi, while the all-India average prices are Rs 44.16 per kg for onions and Rs 37.22 per kg for potatoes.
The prices of other green vegetables are also high. At Mother Dairy on Saturday, sponge gourd (tori) is Rs 59 per kg, bitter gourd (karela) Rs 49 per kg, French beans Rs 89 per kg, lady finger (bhindi) Rs 49 per kg, round gourd (tinda) Rs 119 per kg, green capsicum Rs 119 per kg, small brinjal Rs 49 per kg, large brinjal Rs 59 per kg, pointed gourd (parval) Rs 49 per kg, bottle gourd (ghiya) Rs 39 per kg, and taro root (arvi) Rs 69 per kg.
