Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday told BJP MPs from West Bengal that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise is “straightforward” and should not be turned into an unnecessary controversy, even as the party intensifies preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections.

According to sources quoted by News18, the Prime Minister sought direct feedback from MPs sought feedback from the MP on SIR. “SIR is only about ensuring that eligible voters are included and those who are not eligible are removed,” he said, adding that the process should not be “overcomplicated”.

PM Modi also urged MPs to remain confident and focused as the party works towards challenging the ruling Trinamool Congress in 2026. Without naming the TMC or its Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, he cautioned MPs against being distracted by the opposition’s narrative. He reminded them of the BJP’s rapid rise in West Bengal, from three MLAs in 2011 to a much stronger presence in 2016.

“We have to work hard and make sure we win this election in Bengal,” the Prime Minister said, appreciating the MPs’ efforts and urging them to continue the battle against the TMC.

Modi also reviewed local issues, including the recent attack on MP Khagen Murmu. He stressed that MPs must stay closely connected with their constituencies, understand ground realities, and strengthen outreach as part of the party’s election strategy.

The delegation included state president Shamik Bhattacharya and Union ministers Shantanu Thakur and Sukanta Majumdar. The meeting focused on election preparedness and the roadmap to mobilise support across the state.

With West Bengal heading to a high-stakes poll early next year, the BJP has already assigned key responsibilities to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, a signal of the party’s intent to mount a strong challenge as Mamata Banerjee seeks a fourth straight term.
