Rohini Acharya’s appeal to Nitish Kumar for ‘safe home’ signals growing strain within Lalu’s family

Almost a month after disowning her family, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya signalled further strain within the family, when she appealed to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar-led government to ensure that every woman can return to her paternal home without fear, guilt, shame or the need to justify herself.

In a social media post on Thursday, she indirectly commended Nitish Kumar for initiatives like giving Rs 10,000 to women and providing bicycles to schoolgirls, but argued these measures were not enough. She noted that Bihar’s deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset demands broader social and political transformation.

“The government's and society's foremost duty should be to take concrete steps to safeguard equal rights for daughters, particularly in the face of social and familial apathy,” she wrote on X.

“The patriarchal mindset, deeply entrenched in Bihar, creates a pressing need for sweeping changes in both social and political spheres. Every daughter has the right to grow up with the assurance that her parental home is a safe haven, where she can return without fear, guilt, shame, or having to explain herself to anyone. Implementing this measure is not merely an administrative obligation, but a crucial step towards protecting countless women from future exploitation and abuse,” she added.

This came nearly a month after Acharya announced that she was quitting politics and severed ties with the family.

“I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family…This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame,” she wrote in her post on X, which came after RJD was drubbed in the Bihar Assembly polls.

The RJD’s seat tally slipped to 24 from 75 in the Bihar assembly polls.

The ruling NDA decimated the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar to retain power, reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and chief minister Nitish Kumar’s enduring appeal and dealing a body blow to the Congress and ally RJD.
