Rekha Gupta takes oath as Delhi Chief Minister, Parvesh Verma as Deputy CM

BJP MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Rekha Gupta, was sworn-in as Delhi Chief Minister on Thursday.

dEPThe national capital on Thursday got its fourth woman Chief Minister as BJP MLA Rekha Gupta took oath of the office at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.

The oath was administered by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. In a major show of unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, BJP chief JP Nadda and other key NDA leaders huddled at the swearing-in ceremony.

 

Rekha Gupta won the Delhi Assembly polls from Shalimar Bagh defeating AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes. She has become the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi after BJP's Sushma Swaraj, Congress' Sheila Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Atishi.

A lawyer by profession, 50-year-old Gupta hails from the Baniya community, which has been the BJP's traditional voter bloc.

Parvesh Verma, who became a BJP MLA from New Delhi constituency after defeating Arvind Kejriwal, was sworn-in as the Deputy Chief Minister.

Besides them, five other MLAs, including Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh and Ravinder Indraj Singh were also sworn in as ministers in the Delhi government formed by the BJP after 27 years.

The BJP announced Rekha Gupta's name as the Chief Minister on Wednesday, 11 days after its landslide victory in the Assembly elections, ending the AAP's 10-year regime in Delhi.
