Vishal Agarwal, father of the 17-year-old boy who crushed to death two software engineers in Pune with his Porsche, has been sent to judicial custody till June 7.
Five other accused, including the owner and employees of two pubs - where the teenager had allegedly consumed alcohol before the incident - have been also been sent to judicial custody by a special court in Pune.
The speeding luxury car, allegedly driven by the teen, fatally knocked down the motorbike-borne techies - Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa - in Kalyani Nagar area in the wee hours of May 19.
The minor's father, a notable real estate developer in Pune, was arrested under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act. While Section 75 deals with 'willful neglect of a child, or exposing a child to mental or physical illnesses', Section 77 deals with supplying a child with intoxicating liquor or drugs.
The teenager was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) which had granted him bail while asking him to write a 300-word essay. After widespread public outcry, the JJB on May 22 remanded the minor accused to an observation home till June 5.
On May 21, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed shock at the 'extremely lenient' bail granted to the 17-year-old boy who ran over the techies.
Earlier today, the Pune police said that the 17-year-old was in his senses when the accident took place.
"He (minor accused) was in his senses. It was not as if all of them were so drunk that they could not understand anything. They had full knowledge that due to their conduct, an incident like section 304 can happen," police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said.
According to the top cop, attempts were made to make it appear that the minor was not at the wheel and some adult person was driving the car at the time of the accident.
During the hearing on Friday, the prosecution while seeking extension of the police custody told the court that the juvenile had paid a bill of Rs 47,000 at Cosie Restaurant on the night of the accident, and the police wanted to find out details of the bank account from which the payment was made.
According to various reports, the accused Agarwal family reportedly once sought help from an underworld don in a property dispute.
