Located in Satara district, Patan assembly constituency is one of the 288 constituencies of Maharashtra which goes to polls on November 20. It is a part of Satara Lok Sabha constituency, along with five other assembly constituencies - Wai, Karad South, Koregaon, Satara and Karad North from the Satara district.
Constituency number 261, Patan was established in 1951 and is currently represented by Shambhuraj Desai. It is an unreserved constitueny where the Congress party has tasted success the most.
According to Maharashtra chief election commissioner (CEO), Patan assembly constituency will have 424 polling stations.
Who are the key contenders?
The Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) has once again fielded Shambhuraj Desai, who has been representing the constituency since 2014. While Shiv Sena (UBT) has nominated Bhanupratap Harshad Kadam from Patan for the November 20 elections, Vijay Jaysingh Patankar is fighting the polls as an Independent candidate.
Desai, who has also emerged victorious from Patan in 2004, is eyeing his third consecutive win from the assembly constituency.
Patan constituency: Past election results
In the 2019 assembly elections, Shambhuraj Desai emerged victorious from Patan constituency by defeating Satyajit Vikramsinh Patankar, who contested on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket. Desai, in 2019, won the Patan assembly seat with a margin of over 14,000 votes.
The Shiv Sena candidate defeated NCP's Satyajit Vikramsinh Patankar in 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections as well but the margin was slightly higher at over 18,000 votes. Congress candidate Hindurao Shankarrao Patil garnered just over 7,600 votes in 2014.
Patankar's father Vikramsinh Ranjitsinh Patankar represented the Patan assembly constituency a record six times (1983, 1985, 1990, 1995, 1999 and 2009).
2024 Patan election & results dates
The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) are constituents of the MVA along with the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). The opposition bloc is locked in a close fight with the ruling Mahayuti front in the elections to the 288-member assembly. The Patan constituency will go to polls on November 20, along with all other seats in the state. Votes will be counted three days later, on November 23.
