The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to address the House, following intense protests by opposition MPs near the treasury benches. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari alleged that opposition members moved close to the Prime Minister’s chair, raising serious security concerns.

Opposition MPs, holding banners and sloganeering, disputed the claims and accused the government of avoiding debate. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the Prime Minister skipped the House due to the protests, while Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav said the opposition wanted Modi to respond to key issues.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday criticised the Centre over India’s crude oil import policy, warning that any move to stop buying oil from Russia at the behest of the United States would directly impact the Indian public.

“If you stop buying oil from Russia at the behest of the US, it will directly impact the people of India. We buy about 40% of our crude oil from Russia. Now, America is saying that India should not buy oil from Russia but instead buy it from the US or Venezuela. If we stop buying oil from Russia, it will put a burden of Rs 80,000 crore on the public,” Singh said.

The AAP leader also accused the government of failing to provide clear answers in Parliament on the issue. “There are many questions that the minister has not answered in the Parliament,” he said, adding that the party’s agitation would continue. “Our protest will continue from the streets to the Parliament,” Singh said.

A heated exchange broke out in Parliament on Wednesday as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu engaged in a sharp war of words. Gandhi referred to Bittu as his “traitor friend,” drawing a strong counterattack from the BJP leader, who responded by calling Gandhi a “desh ke dushman” (enemy of the nation).

Congress MPs staged a protest on the steps of Parliament on Monday, holding placards that read “PM Is Compromised”, echoing remarks made a day earlier by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on the India–US trade agreement.

The protest came amid heightened tensions in the Lok Sabha, where Gandhi had raised the China issue during the proceedings. Following the disruption, eight Lok Sabha MPs — Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, B. Manickam Tagore, Dr. Prashant Yadaorao Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and S. Venkatesan, were suspended for the remainder of the session for breaching House rules.

Parliament proceedings continued amid sloganeering and protests from the Opposition benches.

Goyal is expected to speak in the Lok Sabha about the India-US trade deal.

Parliament Session live updates: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the Prime Minister was “too afraid” to allow him to speak in Parliament on issues related to former Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane’s unpublished memoir and the Epstein files.

Gandhi further claimed that the Prime Minister was “compromised” and under “extreme pressure”.

“PM Modi is compromised. The PM is too afraid to let me speak in Parliament about Naravane, the Epstein files, and how he has surrendered on tariffs,” Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, wrote in a post on X.

Parliament Budget Session live: Eight Congress MPs have been suspended for the remainder of the session.

The suspended members are Manickam Tagore, Kiran Reddy, Prashant Padole, Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurjeet Aujla, S Venkat Raman, and Dean Kuriakose.

Both Houses of Parliament will continue deliberations on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address on Wednesday.

In the Lok Sabha, the motion was moved by Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejasvi Surya. A total of 18 hours has been allocated for the discussion, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to respond to the debate later in the day.

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, seeking a discussion on the India-US trade agreement.

Calling for greater transparency, Tewari urged the government to make an immediate statement and allow a full discussion on the issue. “I urge the Government to make an immediate statement and allow a full discussion so that the nation is not presented with decisions taken without transparency in matters of trade, energy, and foreign policy.”

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, objecting to what he described as being prevented from speaking in the House on an issue related to national security.

In the letter, Gandhi termed the incident a “blot on our democracy” and said it was the first time that a Leader of the Opposition had not been allowed to speak during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address.

Gandhi also wrote that established parliamentary convention and past rulings by previous Speakers allow any member to refer to a document in the House, provided the member verifies the document and takes responsibility for its contents, which he said he had done.

Congress Lok Sabha MPs will meet at 10.15 am today at the Congress Parliamentary Party office to finalise the party’s floor strategy for the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.

Party leaders are expected to deliberate on a range of issues, including trade policy, parliamentary conduct, and the government’s legislative agenda, ahead of coordinated action during the proceedings in the House.
