Pakistan has reopened its airspace following a ceasefire agreement with India, AFP reported on Saturday evening. The move comes hours after both countries confirmed a halt to military action and firing along the border, defusing a week of heightened tensions triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the ceasefire would take effect from 5 PM on May 10. He confirmed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called his Indian counterpart at 3 PM, with another round of talks scheduled for May 12.
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also posted on X: “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.” He added that India will maintain its firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all forms.

The diplomatic push was aided by US intervention. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance held urgent talks with top Indian and Pakistani leaders over the past 48 hours, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors from both sides.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce the ceasefire, writing: “India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”
The talks are expected to pave the way for broader negotiations at a neutral country, with the US commending both nations for choosing the path of dialogue over escalation.
