Three terrorists were killed in an encounter that broke out with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian on Tuesday morning.
The encounter initially began in the neighboring Kulgam district before the terrorists moved to Shopian.
Taking to X, Indian Army stated, "OPERATION KELLER. On 13 May 2025, based on specific intelligence of a #RashtriyasRifles Unit, about presence of terrorists in general area Shoekal Keller, #Shopian, #IndianArmy launched a search and destroy Operation. During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in elimination of three hardcore terrorists. Operation is in progress."

Based on a specific input about the presence of terrorists in Shukroo Keller area of the south Kashmir district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation. They said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon the forces who retaliated.

The encounter takes place amid a fragile ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan following days of shelling, drone attacks from Pakistan and retaliatory action from Indian armed forces. Pakistan began shelling after India carried out Operation Sindoor on May 7, under which nine terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
India carried out the operation to avenge the deaths of 26 civilians, mostly tourists, who were gunned down by terrorists in Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam on April 22.
