Telangana Chief Minister and Congress leader Revanth Reddy stirred a political row after he allegedly mocked Hindu gods, with the opposition - BJP and BRS - demanding an immediate apology.

While speaking at an event, Reddy said, "How many gods do Hindus believe in? Are there three crore? Why do so many exist? There is one god for those who are unmarried — Hanuman. There is another god for those who marry twice. And there is yet another god for those who drink alcohol. For hen sacrifice, there is one; for dal and rice, there is one. Each group has its own god."

He questioned the multiplicity of gods in Hindu tradition and even went on to say that Hanuman was the god of the unmarried.

Opposition hits out

Reddy's remark did not sit well with the opposition leaders. BJP leader Chikkoti Praveen said Hindus across the state felt "ashamed" by Reddy's remarks. "The Congress and Revanth Reddy have no shame. In all meetings, they say that Congress is because of Muslims. The Chief Minister must apologise and withdraw his statement," he said, according to a report by India Today.

In a post on X, BRS leader Rakesh Reddy Anugula shared the visuals from Reddy's speech and hit out at the CM. He said mocking Hindu deities had become a fashion for everyone these days.

"Holding the position of Chief Minister and speaking inappropriately about Hindu deities, thereby insulting them, Revanth Reddy garu should immediately apologize to the Hindu community," the the BRS leader said.
