What began as a cordial interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron quickly turned into a moment of light-hearted global humour — with social media amplifying it instantly.
During their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, on June 17, PM Modi jokingly asked Macron, “Nowadays, you are fighting on Twitter?” The offhand comment drew hearty laughter from both leaders, briefly shifting the mood from serious diplomacy to friendly banter.
Online, the exchange quickly gained traction. Within minutes, platforms like X and Instagram were abuzz, with users linking Modi’s quip to recent jabs exchanged between US President Donald Trump and Macron.
The context? A brewing online row over the Israel-Iran situation. After abruptly leaving the G7 early, Trump dismissed Macron’s attempt to characterize the exit as part of a larger diplomatic play. “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange,” Macron had told the media, implying that Washington could broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
Trump, however, hit back from Air Force One via Truth Social: “Wrong! He is ‘publicity seeking’ and always gets it wrong. He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington. Much bigger than that. Stay tuned!”
Many netizens believe this was the subtle reference behind PM Modi’s tongue-in-cheek remark.
At one point in their chat, Macron asked Modi, “When did you arrive?” to which Modi responded, “I reached here last night. Before that, I was in Cyprus.”
PM Modi is attending the annual G7 Summit in Canada, where he’s also scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
