Baba Siddique, senior leader of Ajit Pawar faction's NCP, has died after being shot by unidentified persons in Bandra, Mumbai on October 12.

The firing took place outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique’s office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar, news agency PTI reported citing an official. “Two to three rounds were fired. Further probe is underway as teams have rushed to the area,” the official said. He was undergoing treatment at the Lilavati Hospital which confirmed the news of his death. The incident comes ahead of Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar said that two alleged shooters have been taken into custody.

One of them is from Uttar Pradesh and the other from Haryana, while a third accused fled from the spot, the CM told TV channels.

"This is an extremely unfortunate incident and I spoke to the doctors and police. Two people have been arrested, the accused are from UP and Haryana. The third accused is absconding. We have given instructions to Mumbai Police that strict action should be taken against those who take law and order into their hands...I am sure that Mumbai police will soon arrest the third accused...Strict action will be taken against the accused," CM Shinde added.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said he lost a good colleague, and friend. He posted on X: "The incident of firing on NCP leader, former Minister of State, my colleague Baba Siddiqui who has been in the Legislature for a long time is very unfortunate, condemnable and painful. I was shocked to know that he died in this incident. I have lost my good colleague, and friend. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack. I offer my heartfelt tributes to Baba Siddiqui."

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said that this seems to be a huge conspiracy. "Baba Siddique's murder is a matter of concern. The government should make a special team and investigate this. It seems to be a huge conspiracy. Strict action should be taken," he added.

Mumbai Congress posted on X:

Siddiqui had joined the NCP from the Congress in February.

Siddique was the MLA for three consecutive terms in 1999, 2004 and 2009, and had also served as a Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour and FDA, (2004–08).
