The Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency is one of the 288 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra. It is a part of the Mumbai North East Lok Sabha constituency.

The population of the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar assembly constituency is predominantly Muslim, and is believed to be around 58 per cent. Marathis, North Indians, South Indians and Dalits comprise the remaining 42 per cent.

The constituency has remained a Samajwadi Party (SP) stronghold under MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who has successfully countered challenges from Shiv Sena, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, Congress, and independent candidates like Mohammad Siraj Mohammad Iqbal.

Key candidates in the 2024 polls:

Azmi, the three-term Samajwadi Party MLA and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally, is up against tough opposition in this election. His main rival is Suresh 'Bullet' Patil, the Shiv Sena candidate representing the Mahayuti alliance.

NCP’s Nawab Malik is also in the race, despite pushback from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior BJP leader Ashish Shelar had said that his party is against Malik’s candidature for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly election.

Malik, a former minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, was arrested in 2022 in a case initially registered by the NIA against Dawood Ibrahim and associates, including Chhota Shakeel and Tiger Memon. He was granted bail on medical grounds in July this year. Malik had joined the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the NCP following the party’s split, despite objections from ally BJP.

A look at past results:

Azmi won by a considerable margin in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, defeating his nearest rival Vithal Govind Lokare of the then undivided Shiv Sena by a margin of 25,601 votes. In the 2014 and 2009 polls too, Azmi emerged victorious from the constituency.

Polling and counting date for Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency

The Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency will go to polls on November 20, together with all the other seats in the state. Counting of votes, meanwhile, will be done on November 23.
