Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered a CBI investigation into RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident

Following the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of outpatient department (OPD) services from Tuesday.

Here are the key developments

-CBI has taken over investigation in the alleged rape and murder of the woman doctor in medical college in Kolkata, officials told PTI.

- Union minister Giriraj Singh has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of trying to influence the probe into the horrific rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. "Mamata Banerjee should be ashamed of the incident which was more ghastly than even the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape that took place in Delhi years ago," he said.

- Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered a CBI investigation into RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident. Court directed police to hand over all documents related to the woman doctor's murder case to CBI by 10 am on Wednesday.

- The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court today questioned how the principal, who resigned from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital taking moral responsibility, could be appointed to another government college. The Chief Justice instructed the principal to submit a leave application by 3 pm today or face a court order to vacate the new position.

- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, West Bengal, calling for a detailed report over the alleged rape and murder of the woman doctor in Kolkata.

- The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday wrote a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, saying that the agency is “shocked beyond words” over the incident.

- “There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth and injuries over the face. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg... neck, in her right hand, ring finger and... lips,” according to the autopsy report.

-IMA asked the health ministry to reconsider introducing the Draft Legislation of "Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of violence and damage to property) Bill 2019' in Parliament with appropriate amendments.

-Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is following the “Raj Dharma”. “Didi is acting like the mother of Bengal. She is also extremely sad because of this incident... Such incidents used to happen under CPI(M) regime... Under BJP rule, Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj, Gujarat, Bilkis, MP, Manipur all of it happened one after another. This shouldn't have happened in Bengal, but it happened. It is a social crime…” he said.

- Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said the Bengal CM is delaying the CBI probe . “If she wants to have a CBI inquiry in this matter, she should hand it over soon as proof in such cases do not remain for many days,” he added.

- Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital questioned why West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set a seven-day deadline for solving the case.

-In New Delhi, other major hospitals which participated in the strike included the Maulana Azad Medical College, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Institute of Human Behaviour, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital.

-The police said after committing the crime, the accused, Sanjay Roy, went to a police barrack and slept till Friday morning. Investigation revealed that the arrested man was also a member of a welfare unit of the Kolkata Police.

- The accused has a history of being physically abusive with his wives. He married four times. His fourth wife died of cancer while the other three left him. "Sanjoy Roy's neighbours said his first wife was from Behala, while the second wife was from Park Circus." "He got married for the third time to a girl from Barrackpore. But that also did not last long. Then he married a girl from the city's Alipore area," a neighbour told Hindustan Times.

-Four junior doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor have been summoned again. Kolkata police also summoned HoD, Assistant Super, male-female nurses, group-D staff and security members today at Kolkata police headquarters.

-"After three days of sustained pressure that saw the medical fraternity speaking in one voice against him, RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh resigned on Monday, only to be rehabilitated within four hours by TMC govt as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). Is he being rewarded by TMC for attempting at covering up the brutal rape & murder of PGT doctor ," said BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla.

-Won't allow the principal inside, say Kolkata medical college students  as they close the college gates.

- Women in Kolkata and other parts of Bengal will take to the streets late Wednesday night. The protest, which will begin at 11.55 pm, has been described as, "For women's independence on the midnight of independence".

- Doctors and medical students hold a protest at AIIMS Delhi.
