An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Kathua district on Tuesday during a search operation, sources told News18.
According to the sources, the exchange of fire took place in the Billawar area when a terrorist opened fire during the operation, prompting police to retaliate. The operation was ongoing at the time of reporting.
Sources said a commander linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed is likely trapped in the area. Further details are awaited.
Search operation turns into gunfight
The encounter occurred as security forces were conducting a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the region. Officials said the situation remained fluid, with forces maintaining a tight cordon to prevent any escape.
Earlier clash in the same belt
The latest exchange of fire comes days after a gunfight in forested areas near Kahog village in Billawar, where security forces had launched a search following information about two to three terrorists hiding in the area.
Inspector General of Police (Jammu) Bhim Sen Tuti had earlier said that the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police engaged terrorists in the forests of Kamadh Nullah in Kathua.
More details are awaited.
