Lauding Japan's contribution to India's economic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tokyo has played a significant role in various important projects over the years.
Noting the shared potential to lead the tech revolution of the 21st century, PM Modi said: "India has taken bold and ambitious initiatives in AI, semiconductor, quantum computing, biotech, and space. The technology of Japan and the talent of India can together lead the tech revolution of this century....India-Japan have signed an agreement on Joint Credit Mechanism for cooperation on clean fuel and green future..."
Addressing India-Japan Joint Economic Forum, PM Modi said: "Japan has always been an important partner in India's development journey. From metro rail to manufacturing, semiconductors to startups...Japanese companies have invested over $ 40 billion in India..." In his speech, he described India as the best destination for investment, underlining the country’s political and economic stability, transparency in policy, and predictability. In a pitch to deepen business ties between the two nations, PM cited the example of Suzuki and Daikin’s success story.
The Prime Minister arrived in Japan on Friday for a two-day official visit. In Tokyo, PM Modi will attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit and hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, with a focus on trade, investment, defence and technology. PM Modi's visit comes amid a downturn in India-US relations over President Donald Trump's steep tariffs on Indian imports.
Speaking at the same forum, the Japanese PM outlined three initiatives to further bilateral cooperation. First, the promotion of people-to-people exchanges, recalling his visit to Varanasi six years ago and praising the energy and hard work of the Indian people. Second, the fusion of technology and market, citing Japanese collaboration on projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail. Third, continued support for long-term business ventures, highlighting Maruti Suzuki, which entered India 40 years ago and now holds a significant market share.
After concluding his Japan trip on Saturday, PM Modi will leave for China to attend the 25th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
