A major theme emerging alongside the trade pact is collaboration on critical minerals, a sector increasingly central to defence, energy transition, and advanced manufacturing. MacLeod noted that the United States is engaging with 55 countries to build what she described as a “smooth, resilient and trusted” supply chain.

She pointed out that some nations are currently disrupting existing supply routes, prompting the US to encourage investments in mining, refining, processing, and recycling. The objective is to secure essential raw materials for industries linked to national security, energy, and defence.

According to Margaret MacLeod, US President Donald Trump reduced tariffs on Indian imports after India agreed to halt the import of Russian oil. The reduction from the earlier 25 percent level was positioned as a confidence-building step that paved the way for the Free Trade Agreement announced this week.

MacLeod emphasised that the FTA should be viewed as “just a step in our long journey ahead,” indicating that further economic negotiations and sector-specific deals are likely in the coming months.

The recently announced Free Trade Agreement between India and the United States is being described not as a finish line, but as the beginning of a longer strategic and economic journey between the two countries. Officials on both sides have framed the pact as a foundation for deeper cooperation in trade, critical minerals, and global supply chains, signalling that the relationship is expanding beyond tariffs into long-term geopolitical alignment.

Speaking on the development, the US State Department’s Hindustani spokesperson Margaret MacLeod underlined that the agreement represents only an early milestone, even as it has already triggered significant policy shifts and diplomatic engagements at the highest levels.
