Cold wave warning issued as temperatures plunge across north and central India: IMD

Furman Raza Khan, son of Maulana Tauqeer Raza, the alleged mastermind of the September 2025 Bareilly violence, was taken into custody after police recovered drugs and a syringe from his car following an accident in Shahjahanpur. Police grew suspicious after noticing his unusual behaviour at the crash site on the Lucknow–Delhi highway.

Delhi Police have arrested five people after stone-pelting broke out during an MCD demolition drive near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid at Turkman Gate, injuring five policemen. Police said the violence erupted as civic officials moved to clear illegal encroachments under a court order, with videos showing slogans being raised and calls made to gather more people at the site.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed western countries for offering “free advice” to India on Operation Sindoor, accusing them of hypocrisy. He questioned why they do not address violence in their own regions and stressed that India must pursue its policies independently, undeterred by external commentary.

A Delhi court on Tuesday directed police to verify the bail bonds and surety documents of four activists granted bail by the Supreme Court in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. The order affects Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, and Mohammad Saleem Khan, who submitted personal bonds of Rs 2 lakh each along with two local sureties of similar amounts. The development comes after some defendants spent over five years in custody.

An intense cold wave is expected to sweep across large parts of northern India from Wednesday night, with temperatures dropping to single digits in several cities, the IMD said. States including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi are likely to see peak cold conditions between January 8 and 15, with mercury expected to fall another 2–3 degrees in the coming days.
