An intense cold wave is set to tighten its grip on large parts of north and central India from Wednesday night, with temperatures dipping to single digits in several cities, the IMD said. The weather agency warned of cold day conditions, dense fog and a further fall in minimum temperatures over the next few days, comparing the spell to severe winters in December 2019 and early 2024.

An intense cold wave is expected to sweep across large parts of northern India from Wednesday night, with temperatures dropping to single digits in several cities, the IMD said. States including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi are likely to see peak cold conditions between January 8 and 15, with mercury expected to fall another 2–3 degrees in the coming days.
