'Hit by slipper, cursed, orphaned': Rohini Acharya's shocking revelations a day after she quit politics

Rohini Acharya's posts carried even sharper personal accusations. She claimed she was called “dirty” and accused of having given her father Lalu Yadav a “dirty kidney,” besides being taunted that she had taken money for it.

Rohini Acharya’s dramatic fallout with her party and family continued to unfold a day after she announced on X Saturday that she was quitting politics and “disowning” those closest to her. In an emotionally charged social media post, she repeated her allegations, saying that “yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated,” and that “filthy abuses were hurled at her” before “a slipper was raised to hit her.” She wrote that she “did not compromise on my self-respect” and refused to “surrender the truth,” which, she claimed, led to the ordeal she faced.

The doctor-turned-politician said she left her maternal home in distress: “Yesterday, a daughter, out of compulsion, left behind her crying parents and sisters and went away; they forced me to leave my maternal home. They left me orphaned.” She added that she hoped no one else would ever go through what she experienced and that “no family ever have a daughter-sister like Rohini.”

Her posts carried even sharper personal accusations. She claimed she was called “dirty” and accused of having given her father Lalu Yadav a “dirty kidney,” besides being taunted that she had taken money for it. She went on to say, “To all the daughters and sisters who are married, I will say that when there's a son or brother in your maternal home, never, ever save your god-like father; instead, tell your brother… to get his own kidney or that of one of his Haryanvi friends transplanted," in an apparent jibe at her brother and former deputy CM of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav's inner circle and friends within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

She lamented that her efforts to look after her father had now been turned into grounds for humiliation. “For me, it became a huge sin that I didn't look after my family… didn't take permission from my husband or my in-laws when donating the kidney… I did what I did to save my god, my father, and today it's been called dirty.”

Her personal anguish spilled into politics when she landed in Patna on Saturday. Speaking to reporters, she alleged that senior figures within the RJD were responsible for her estrangement. “I don't have a family. You should go and ask Tejashwi Yadav, Sanjay Yadav, and Rameez. They are the ones who threw me out of the family,” she said at the airport.

According to her, questioning the party’s poor performance triggered retaliation: “They do not want to take any responsibility… The whole nation is asking why the party failed like this.” She added that taking the names of Sanjay Yadav or Rameez led to her being “thrown out of the house, disgraced, and abused.” A video of her remarks was circulated by ANI.

She announced her decision to quit on Saturday. “I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family. This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do. I’m taking all the blame,” she wrote.

Acharya, who had donated a kidney to her father and previously contested the Lok Sabha elections from Bihar’s Saran seat, lost the 2024 battle to BJP’s Rajeev Pratap Rudy. Reports before the Bihar polls had suggested she was unhappy over the growing influence of Sanjay Yadav -- political adviser to Tejashwi Yadav -- within the RJD. Tensions inside the wider Yadav family had already been visible earlier, when Lalu Prasad expelled his eldest son, Tej Pratap Yadav, from both the family and the party for six years.

Although speculation suggested she was upset over Tej Pratap’s removal, Rohini had still been seen campaigning for Tejashwi Yadav during the assembly race.
