Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh campaigned in Mokama on Monday.

After Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh allegedly made remarks to intimidate voters, the Patna district administration on Tuesday registered an FIR against the Union Minister.

The case has been filed under appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Representation of the People Act for alleged violations during the election process.

Addressing a campaign rally in Mokama, Singh reportedly told supporters that certain people “should not be allowed to leave their homes on election day" and must be “packed away at home".

Both Lalan Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary campaigned in Mokama on Monday.

Singh was campaigning for  Anant Singh, who has been arrested in connection with the murder of another gangster-politician, Dular Singh Yadav, who was campaigning for the Jan Suraaj candidate.

Singh reportedly said, “There are some people… they should not be allowed to leave their homes on the day of the election. If they plead too much… then take them with you and, after voting, bring them back home and make them sleep. They have to be packed away at home. Take charge now. There is no time left for election."

The RJD  accused Singh of “bulldozing over the Election Commission", alleging that his comments were a direct attempt to suppress the votes of marginalised communities. The Election Commission of India issued a notice to Singh, seeking an explanation within 24 hours.

The RJD also released a clip purportedly showing Singh’s comments. “Union Minister Lalan Singh is driving a bulldozer over the Election Commission’s chest… saying the poor should not be allowed to vote. Where is the ‘dead’ Commission?" RJD spokesperson Priyank Bharti said, criticising what he called “state-sponsored intimidation"
