Three members of a family, including the mother, son and daughter, attempted to die by suicide in an apparent coordinated act at their home in the Ashok Nagar district of Ranchi, Jharkhand.
The mother and daughter are in critical condition but the young son Mihir, a chartered accountant, has died. He had recently returned to Ranchi from Kolkata. According to police, he died by suicide after hanging himself at the family's residence, NDTV reported.
Police said Mihir's mother, Sneha Akhouri, and his 14-year-old sister also attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance, however, they were rushed to a hospital by the neighbours. Doctors have said that their condition remains critical.
Sneha Akhouri is a practising lawyer at the Jharkhand High Court.
According to preliminary information, Mihir had completed his Chartered Accountancy course in Kolkata and had recently secured a job with a corporate firm.
Following the incident, police teams cordoned off the house and launched an investigation. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called in to collect evidence, while officers questioned neighbours and local residents to piece together the sequence of events, according to a report by News18.
Police officials said the exact cause and circumstances leading to the incident are still unclear.
