Unnao rape case: Supreme Court stays Delhi HC's order suspending Kuldeep Sengar's life sentence

Dense fog shrouded Delhi on Monday, causing visibility to drop sharply in several areas, disrupting operations at the airport and pushing the air quality back into the 'severe' category. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow' alert for dense fog on Tuesday morning.

The Delhi Government says it is steadily moving forward with its resolve to provide not just a roof, but a dignified and well-facilitated life to citizens belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the capital, according to an official release. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that in this direction, community facilities are being developed in existing EWS residential colonies of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).

The Delhi government has dismissed the reports claiming that the centre has requested all the educational institutions, schools and stadiums to nominate Nodal Officers in matters related to stray dogs and share details of the same as "fake news," according to an official notice, ANI reported.

Teachers in Delhi will be appointed as nodal officers in matters related to stray dogs around their educational institutions following directions issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE). Teachers' associations, however, opposed the move, arguing that assigning such duties during the academic session could adversely affect teaching work, especially as pre-board examinations are currently underway in several schools.

The Delhi government has constituted an expert committee to provide independent ideas, suggestions and solutions to tackle the capital's chronic air quality crisis, officials said on Monday. The committee is key to the government's five-pronged pollution-control strategy, which focuses on innovation, scientific management of dust and solid waste, action against polluting industries, reduction of vehicular emissions, and long-term efforts to make Delhi greener and healthier.

After expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar's lawyers said that allegations were made against the Delhi High Court judges who suspended his life sentence in the Unnao rape case, the Supreme Court on Monday observed that some people are trying to take "political advantage". The high court had suspended the jail term of Sengar, who was serving life imprisonment in the Unnao rape case, saying he had already served seven years and five months in prison.

Air pollution will remain one of the biggest challenges before the Delhi government in the coming year, even as it launched a slew of measures, including a cloud-seeding trial, deployment of anti-smog guns and mist sprayers.

“I will not rest until he is hanged,” said the Unnao rape survivor on Monday as she expressed satisfaction over the Supereme Court staying the Delhi High Court order suspending the convict Kuldeep Sengar’s life sentence.

Congress women's wing chief Alka Lamba on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to stay a Delhi High Court order that had suspended the life sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. Speaking to reporters, Lamba described the stay as a victory for the rape survivor and her supporters, asserting that the legal battle would continue.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday inaugurated the North East region’s largest auditorium, ‘Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir’, in Assam's Guwahati. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved a proposal of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, for a state-of-the-art Forensic Institute in the Union Territory. The proposal had been sent to establish an institute to consolidate evidence collection, increase conviction rates and help in better investigation and diagnosis in the health sector, officials said.

Rajasthan Congress leaders and environmental activists on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to stay its November 20 order on the new definition of the Aravalli range, terming it a victory for all those fighting for the protection of the hills for the past month. The apex court kept in abeyance the directions in its November 20 verdict that had accepted a uniform definition of the Aravalli hills and ranges recommended by a committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. On doctors' ending their strike, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, says, "I am glad that the doctors have returned to work. Regarding the scuffle, we will form a committee and submit an investigation report. The government will seriously and sensitively consider the doctors' demands."

On the Supreme Court's stay of the order of the Delhi High Court, which suspended life sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case of a minor girl, Congress leader Mumtaz Patel says, "We are hopeful now that justice will be given to the Unnao victim. Kuldeep Sengar should be given a death sentence. A new law should come in which the rapists should be given death sentence..."

The Supreme Court has stayed Delhi High Court's order suspending life sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in 2017 Unnao rape case. Ahead of the hearing of a petition filed by CBI against the order, security was heightened outside the apex court.

The Supreme Court has also issued a notice to Sengar on an appeal of CBI against HC order.
