The site was back soon with people seeing a long queue for tickets

Entertainment and ticketing platform BookMyShow website crashed seconds before the platform went live with the sale of tickets for the much anticipated Coldplay concert to be held in Mumbai next year.

Attributing the crash to the huge surge in traffic, BookMyShow said the platform tried to ensure fair chance to every fan for tickets.

"Today is a landmark moment in India’s live entertainment history as we saw true fandom, overwhelming love and incredible excitement for Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 in India. With 13 million (1.3 crore) fans eager to get tickets and logged in, emotions ran high—some celebrating while others were left disappointed," said a BookMyShow spokesperson, adding that the platform ensured every fan had a fair chance to secure tickets.

"We implemented a queueing system to manage the overwhelming demand and addressed issues caused by suspicious and malicious traffic within minutes, causing a brief delay, but ensuring minimal disruption for genuine fans. Due to the unprecedented demand, a third Mumbai show was added shortly thereafter, which also received a fantastic response," the company said.

The British band will be making its return to India after nine years, with the concert taking place in Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium on January 18 and 19. However, due to the unprecedented demand, a third date has been added to Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour in India, BookMyShow said. The Grammy-award winning band will now also perform on January 21, 2025.

Due to the disappointment when the BookMyShow platform crashed just before people were about to book tickets, many took to social media platform X to express their disappointment.

One user said that "To get sold out on Coldplay was acceptable. To not be able to Log in was not."

The user added, "They (BookMyShow) didn't even worry about the server, Why did you decide to host the ticket sale."

The BookMyShow site soon went live again with the sale of Coldplay concert tickets but with long online queues.

Many showed their displeasure of waiting in long online queues by sharing screenshots of the site displaying messages like 'six lakh people ahead of you' to book Coldplay concert tickets.

Ahead of their Mumbai shows, Coldplay will release their new album, Moon Music, on October 4, 2024. The album will be produced with a strong emphasis on sustainability, featuring LPs made from 100% recycled plastic bottles—nine bottles per record.

Since its launch in March 2022, the Music of the Spheres World Tour has sold over 10 million tickets, making it the most attended tour by a group in history. The tour, which spans Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, will also include stops in Abu Dhabi, Seoul, and Hong Kong between January and April 2025.
