Alinagar, a key legislative assembly constituency in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, is set to witness a direct contest between two generations.
The seat will go to polls in the first phase of Bihar election on November 6 along with 120 other constituencies.
Alinagar lies approximately 38 km east of Darbhanga town, the district headquarters, and about 145 km north of Patna. It has been historically dominated by Brahmin, Yadav and Muslim voters. Alinagar is a general category Assembly constituency which forms part of the Darbhanga Lok Sabha seat and comprises the Alinagar, Tardih, Ghanshyampur community development blocks and Motipur panchayat.
Alinagar had 275,559 registered voters in the 2020 Assembly elections.
According to reports, Alinagar faces recurring challenges of seasonal flooding and poor road connectivity.
Who are the key contenders?
The BJP’s surprise pick folk singer Maithili Thakur (25) is up against RJD candidate Binod Mishra (63). Jan Suraaj Party candidate Biplaw Kumar Chowdhary is also contesting from the Alinagar seat.
According to reports, the BJP candidate’s meetings are drawing huge crowds with Maithili singing devotional songs. She recently released her new album, “Chhath Ki Mahima”. “Alinagar will become Sitanagar if I win the election from the seat,” the 25-year-old BJP candidate told people during her election campaign.
