Late Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's wife and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar was elected as the leader of NCP Legislative Party on Saturday afternoon.
She is also set to take oath as the deputy CM of Maharashtra today, becoming the state's first woman deputy CM. Her nomination was proposed by senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal and seconded by other senior leaders and she was unanimously elected.
Governor Acharya Devvrat, who is currently in Mussoorie, will arrive in Mumbai at 4 pm for the oath-taking ceremony.
The development comes three days after NCP chief and deputy CM Ajit Pawar was killed in a chartered plane crash in Baramati. 4 more people were killed in the crash.
Who is Sunetra Pawar?
Until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sunetra Pawar maintained a low public profile. She contested from Baramati as the NCP candidate that year but lost to her sister-in-law and incumbent NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule.
She was later elected to the Rajya Sabha.
