Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD, Air India, said, "I am sharing this message from Ahmedabad, where Air India Flight AI171 to Gatwick crashed shortly after take off yesterday. Tragically, since my first briefing, we have confirmed that 241 of the 242 passengers and crew perished in the incident. All of us at Air India are devastated by this loss and grieve for those affected, their families and their loved ones.

Air India's advanced team of nearly 100 caregivers and 40 engineers has now arrived in Ahmedabad. The technical team is now helping at the site and the caregivers are providing support to families. Many more caregivers are travelling to Ahmedabad to provide further support. We have set up Friends and Relatives Assistance Centres at Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi and London Gatwick airports for the next of kin of air passengers and crew members. These Centres are facilitating their travel to Ahmedabad and providing them full support.

The Tata Group, our parent company, has announced that they will provide Rs 1 Crore or approximately 85,000 British Pounds to the families of each person who lost their life and will cover the medical expenses of those injured. We are also deeply concerned for the well-being of the students of the medical hostel involved in the accident. Air India is committed to providing full and unstinting assistance in these difficult times.

This morning, I visited the crash site and was deeply moved by the scenes. I also met key stakeholders in the government and assured them that Air India is committed to full cooperation with those working on the ground and to the investigations. We know that the investigations will take time, but we will be fully transparent and will support the process for as long as it takes. Air India will continue to do everything we can to care for those affected by this tragedy and to uphold the trust placed in us."

On the AI-171 plane crash, Commercial Pilot Captain Asraf Sheikh says, "...It could be human error. One pilot might have mistakenly raised the flaps instead of the landing gear. That's the only explanation based on my experience... The second possibility is fuel contamination, which can deprive both engines of proper fuel, potentially causing the aircraft's fall... Other theories include hydraulic failure and bird strikes, which also need consideration..."

Tata Group Head Natarajan Chandrasekaran writes to his colleagues, "What occurred yesterday was inexplicable, and we are in shock and mourning. To lose a single person we know is a tragedy, but for so many deaths to occur at once is incomprehensible. This is one of the darkest days in the Tata Group's history. Words are no consolation right now, but my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the people who died and were injured in the crash. We are here for them...You know that in the past 24 hours, investigative teams from India, UK, and the US have arrived in Ahmedabad to investigate the crash. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, after the recovery of black box, said, "The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) has been recovered within 28 hours from the accident site in Ahmedabad by AAIB. This marks an important step forward in the investigation. This will significantly aid the enquiry into the incident."

Contrary to some reports, the video recorder being circulated is not the DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder). The black box was found on the rooftop. AAIB began work with full force immediately. Akash Vatsa, who claimed in a viral tweet yesterday that he flew in the same Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Delhi to Ahmedabad, hours before it crashed soon after take off while flying as Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London, spoke exclusively to ANI.

He said, "... I did not witness any issues when the flight took off. I felt something was unusual with the plane's flaps outside. Experts will be able to decode this better... The ACs were not working properly when the flight was on the ground before taking off... At cruising altitude, I noticed that the rear part of the flaps was moving up and down repeatedly. However, many aviation experts have pointed out that it is normal for the ACs to be off to give the plane a better thrust. I tried to complain about it, but the crew was in a rush because the flight was almost ready for take off... Even after the AC was switched on, its temperature kept fluctuating... Even when we got on the shuttle bus after the flight, many other passengers exclaimed that the bus's AC was working better than the flight's."

Anju Sharma (55), whose parents live in Ramsaran Majra village in Haryana's Kurukshetra district, was among the victims of the Air India plane that crashed soon after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday.

Anju had boarded the London-bound flight to meet her elder daughter, who is now reaching Ahmedabad after the tragedy that killed 241 of the 242 persons on board. Anju's uncle Balkishan Sharma told PTI over the phone on Friday that her parents are yet to be informed about the tragedy, fearing they will be unable to bear the shock.

“I don't know how to break this tragic news to my brother. But we cannot hide it for too long...,” he said.  Anju had shifted from Patiala, where she was married in the ‘90s, to Vadodara where she settled down, Balkishan said. A local resident who lives just 100 metres from the AI-171 crash site recounted the harrowing moments following the incident. “I entered the garden and saw thick smoke coming out of the building. I immediately called my friends—around 15 to 20 of them rushed over. I told them a plane had crashed. Everyone we rescued was alive at the time, but sadly, two people died on the way to the hospital. While I was there, we managed to rescue four people. My other friends saved around 20 to 25 students. We also recovered eight gas cylinders from the site.”

DIG of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Hari Om Gandhi, said on Friday that six NDRF teams have been deployed and are actively engaged in rescue operations following the crash.

“Our six teams have been on the ground and working since yesterday. All units are operating in close coordination,” Gandhi stated. “As soon as we received the alert, our personnel jumped into action.”

He added that it is currently too early to estimate how many individuals might still be trapped under the debris. “Until the area is fully cleared, we cannot confirm the exact number. The injured have already been taken to hospitals, and official figures have been released,” he said.

Air India has established Friends & Relatives Assistance Centres at Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and London’s Gatwick airport to provide round-the-clock support to the families and loved ones of those on board the ill-fated flight AI171.

The airline is also assisting the travel of family members to Ahmedabad, where the London-bound Boeing 787 crashed shortly after take-off, killing over 240 people.

Union Minister CR Paatil, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel arrived at the domestic terminal of Ahmedabad airport on Friday to assess the situation following the tragic Air India AI-171 crash.

“Nita and I, along with the entire Reliance family, are deeply pained and anguished by the grave loss of life caused by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. We extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragic incident. “When the crash happened, it felt like an earthquake. We rushed to the site immediately. After the loud noise, people from nearby areas gathered,” said a resident living in a housing colony close to the AI-171 crash site.

Anjali Rupani, wife of late BJP leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday. She was received at the airport by Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi. Vijay Rupani was among the 242 people killed in the Air India AI-171 crash on Thursday.

241 passengers lost their lives in the plane crash yesterday. Boeing and GE Aerospace are scaling back public engagements in the wake of the fatal Air India jetliner crash that killed over 240 people, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in a decade. Boeing’s CEO has canceled his upcoming trip to the Paris Airshow, while GE Aerospace has postponed its scheduled investor day.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav announced the postponement of all party events for the next three days as a tribute to the victims.

"Tribute to everyone who lost their lives in the very tragic accident in Ahmedabad! In this hour of grief, all of us are with every bereaved family," he wrote on X.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also cancelled all his scheduled engagements for Friday, saying, “The entire nation is mourning this loss.”

Condolences have been issued by global dignitaries, including UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Czech PM Petr Fiala, Finland's PM Petteri Orpo, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Others who expressed grief include the foreign ministers of the Czech Republic and Afghanistan, Austrian Ambassador Katharina Wieser, EU Ambassador Herve Delphin, and the Taliban-led Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday expressed gratitude to global leaders and governments for their messages of condolence following the tragic crash of an Air India jetliner in Ahmedabad that claimed over 240 lives.

"Thank all foreign leaders and Governments for their condolences at the tragic loss of lives in the Ahmedabad air crash. We appreciate this deeply," Jaishankar posted on X.

Air India has confirmed that 241 people on board its London-bound flight were killed when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday.

The Boeing 787-8 aircraft was carrying 242 passengers and crew members. The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national.

"We regret to inform that of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities," the airline said in a statement issued late Thursday.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed grief over the Air India plane crash in Ahmadabad and extended condolences to the families of the victims. "Saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight near Ahmedabad today. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims grieving this immense loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," he wrote on X.

Meanwhile, deputy PM and foreign minister Ishaq Dar wrote, "Saddened at the crash of Air India flight in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Condolences over the loss of precious lives in this tragic incident. Our sympathies are with the families of the victims in this hour of grief."

Talking about the Air India plane crash, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that a fair and thorough investigation will be conducted in the case. "I am totally shaken by the tragic and horrific incident. I am still in a state of shock. The PM called me and asked me to be here at the site. At this time, I can only think of the passengers and their families. Many agencies have been engaged in rescue operations. I don't want to say anything about the numbers yet. We are extending all help," he said.

Air India said that is organising two relief flights -- one each from Delhi and Mumbai, to Ahmedabad for the next of kin of passengers and Air India staff.

"Tata Group will provide Rs 1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy. Ahmedabad top cop GS Malik, speaking with ANI, said the police found one survivor in seat 11A. "One survivor has been found in the hospital and is under treatment. Cannot say anything about the number of deaths yet. The death toll may increase as the flight crashed in a residential area,"  he said.

Former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani was among the 230 passengers onboard the Air India flight. He has been confirmed dead, according to a report by CNN-News18.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reacting to the tragic Air India plane crash, said: "To my friend @PMOIndia @narendramodi and the people of India, I was saddened to learn of the tragic Air India crash that has taken the lives of 242 men, women and children."

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen," he added.

Dhananjay Dwivedi, Principal Secretary, Gujarat Health Department urged the families of the passengers to submit their DNA samples in order to assist in identifying the victims. "At around 1:40 PM, the aircraft crashed into the hostel and staff quarters of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. More than 50 injured individuals have been admitted to Civil Hospital," he said.

"The FAA is in contact with the NTSB regarding Air India flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London Gatwick (LGW), that was involved in an accident in India on Thursday.  When an international incident occurs, that government leads the investigation. In the event assistance is requested, the NTSB is the official U.S. representative and the FAA provides technical support. We stand ready to launch a team immediately in coordination with the NTSB," says Federal Aviation Administration.

Ahmedabad Police released a list of 25 people who were injured in the Air India flight mishap today and are bring treated in the hospital, says News18 report.

Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his condolences over the Ahmedabad plane crash. “​I am shocked to learn of the tragic crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers in Ahmedabad. We extend our deepest condolences to all the families who lost their dear ones at this tragic incident. At this trying hour, our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people and Government of India, and offer our full support in any form. ​Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

The Air India plane crashed into residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area on Thursday, according to reports. Several people living in the residential quarters located near the Ahmedabad airport were reportedly injured in the crash.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad “absolutely devastating”. He said, “In this time of tragedy, Australia’s thoughts are with everyone affected. Our government is receiving regular updates and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is now operational with limited flights, says PTI.

Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has stated it will launch a probe into the Air India plane crash at the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday.  The Air India's Dreamliner Boeing 787 aircraft had 242 people on board, including 12 crew members. Speaking to PTI, officials shared that AAIB Director General and Director of Investigation at the agency, among others, will be leaving for Ahmedabad.

Two BSF teams and 100 personnel of CRPF Rapid Action Force are currently on the way to the site of the Ahmedabad plane crash, carrying out relief and rescue operations. At least 50 personnel from Group Centre Gandhinagar will also reach Ahmedabad, says a report by News18.

"I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the families of the passengers and the crew. The visuals are most heart-wrenching. The entire country is overtaken by grief and is praying," said Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

An emergency meeting was held in New Delhi with senior officials of the Ministry of Civil Aviation following the Ahmedabad plane crash, according to MoS Murlidhar Mohol. The incident was reviewed during the meeting. Discussions were also held regarding relief operations at the crash site, according to News18.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi  termed the Ahmedabad plane crash “heartbreaking” and expressed condolences for the victims. “The pain and anxiety the families of the passengers and crew must be feeling is unimaginable. Urgent rescue and relief efforts by the administration are critical – every life matters, every second counts. Congress workers must do everything they can to help on the ground," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed deepest condolences and prayed for as many lives as possible to be saved.

“Horrible news of a passenger plane crash in India. My deepest condolences to Prime Minister @narendramodi and the entire people of India on this tragic day. Our thoughts are with all victims’ relatives and close ones in India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada. We share your shock and grief on this tragic day,” he said.

The CISF personnel immediately activated emergency protocols and rushed to the site of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Rescue operations are being carried out in close coordination with local authorities and emergency services.

An Ahmedabad resident who witnessed the Air India Flight AI171 crash described a scene of chaos, smoke, and devastation just moments after the aircraft went down.

"I was at home when we heard a massive sound," the eyewitness told PTI. "When we went out to see what had happened, there was a layer of thick smoke in the air. When we came here, dead bodies and debris from the crashed aircraft were scattered all over."

Boeing share price plunges by over 6.5% in pre-market trading after 787 Dreamliner crashes in India, according to reports.

"With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India flight, AI 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event," said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman Air India. "At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted."

Union Civil Minister Ram Mohan Naidu posted on X, “Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on the highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families.”

"Stunned and profoundly shocked to know of the most tragic Air India plane crash at Ahmedabad today. It is a most sad news for all of us and I convey my condolences to victim families, even while we anxiously wait for survivors details and pray for survival of all. The crash during take-off of the London-bound plane has shaken and saddened me at my core. While we do not know exact figures, media reports indicate that there were 242 passengers in the plane. I am praying to God at this moment," posts West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on X.

As per ATC, aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. Aircraft Immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site.

According to DGCA, the aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. Capt Sumeet Sabharwal is a LTC with 8200 Hrs of experience. The copilot had 1100 Hrs of flying experience.

"We are following reports of a crash of Air India flight #AI171 from Ahmedabad to London. We received the last signal from the aircraft at 08:08:51 UTC, just seconds after take off. The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB", posts Flightradar24 on X.

"Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on http://airindia.com and on our X handle," says Air India.

Nearby buildings were damaged after the plane crashed in Ahmedabad, say reports.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Police Commissioner regarding the plane crash. He also assured to provide Central government assistance.

Air India was a Boeing Dreamliner 787 craft. It had a capacity of 300 passengers. It was going to London so it had a lot of fuel.

Emergency services, including fire engines and multiple ambulances, have been rushed to the scene. As of now, there is no official word on the number of casualties or the possible cause of the crash.

The flight reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff from city's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The passenger aircraft went down in the Meghani area of the city.
