An Air India plane with 242 people onboard crashed on Thursday in Gujarat’s Meghani Nagar area, close to the Ahmedabad airport.

The aircraft took off from Ahmedabad at 1:39 PM from runway 23 and went down within five minutes of takeoff.

The aircraft was a Boeing Dreamliner (B787), operating as Flight AI-171 on the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route.

The aircraft came down in a densely populated residential area. Local residents quickly rushed to assist in rescue operations.

There were 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew members among the 242 on board.

The crashed aircraft was registered as VT-ANB, a part of Air India’s B787 fleet.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel left from Surat and rushed to Ahmedabad to personally assess the situation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Police Commissioner, assuring central government support.

Air India confirmed the incident via a post on X, stating: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025,” adding that details are still being verified.
