In the aftermath of a terrifying shooting outside her family’s home in Bareilly, Khushboo Patani — retired Indian Army Major and elder sister of Bollywood actor Disha Patani — has responded not with fear, but with strength.
She reminded people that self-defence can involve both quick thinking and physical strength in an empowering video she posted on Instagram a few days after the incident.
In the video, Khushboo showed how even the most basic household objects, like a data cable in this instance, can be used as a protective tool in an emergency.
Her message was unmistakable: responding to danger does not always require formal combat training or weapons. The most important things are resourcefulness and presence of mind.
Her video struck a chord because it followed closely on the heels of a deeply disturbing event. On Friday morning, two unidentified men on a motorcycle fired shots outside Villa No. 40 in Bareilly’s Civil Lines, where the Patani family lives.
Fortunately, no one was injured. Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya confirmed that an FIR had been filed at Kotwali police station, and five investigation teams are now combing through CCTV footage to track down the attackers. Soon after, gangster Goldy Brar claimed responsibility for the shooting in a social media post.

Authorities believe the attack may have been linked to comments Khushboo made about preacher Aniruddhacharya’s stance on live-in relationships. Her comments caused controversy after they were misrepresented and mistakenly credited to spiritual leader Premanand Ji Maharaj.
Khushboo later clarified her position, explaining on Instagram that her words had been taken out of context. Her father, Jagdish Patani, also defended her, saying: “Khushboo was misrepresented. Her name was dragged into the matter of Premanand Ji Maharaj. We are Sanatanis, and we respect the sadhus and saints. If someone is misrepresenting her statement, it is a conspiracy to demean us.”
