Even though Dilwale didn’t quite make a mark as a film, its song Gerua remains unforgettable — not just for its dreamy melody, but for its stunning visuals that took Bollywood romance to new heights. And as it turns out, creating that magic wasn’t easy — or cheap.
In her latest vlog, filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan took a trip to Delhi with her cook-turned-vlogging buddy, Dilip. The two dropped by the home of entrepreneur Ashneer Grover and his wife Madhuri.
Over snacks and casual banter, the conversation veered to the couple’s recent holiday in Iceland — a place known for its jaw-dropping landscapes and, as they’d soon agree, sky-high prices.
Madhuri mentioned that while going through their holiday pictures, they were on the lookout for a Hindi song that would fit the vibe. That’s when Farah immediately brought up Gerua — the only major Bollywood song ever filmed in Iceland. She smiled as she recalled the shoot and all of the crazy difficulties they went through. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who had to perform in flimsy costumes in icy winds, found it particularly challenging to perform even the most straightforward scenes due to the freezing weather.
But the real surprise came when Farah revealed just how much the song cost to film.
“Iceland is the most expensive place,” she said, before sharing that the budget for Gerua was a staggering Rs 7 crore, and that too just for a single song. With only the two actors and the crew shooting, the costs skyrocketed because of the location’s high expenses. Farah joked, “Kitna mehnga hai Iceland!” as the Grovers nodded in agreement, recalling their own brush with the country’s hefty bills.
Despite the massive spend, Gerua ended up becoming a fan-favourite, loved for its grand visuals and the timeless chemistry between SRK and Kajol. Sadly, the film itself didn’t enjoy the same success.
