    Nigerian students flee war-torn Sudan to study in India

    194 Nigerian students studying in Sudan have fled to India and Northern Cyrus to continue education.

    Nearly 194 Nigerian students hailing from Northern Nigeria, who were studying in Sudan before the war started in April 2023, left the country in early February to continue their studies at institutions in India and Northern Cyprus. Although Nigerian institutions agreed to accommodate them, the government announced that 184 will relocate to Cyprus, while 10 others will head to India by February 2024. The names of the institutions were not released.

    It may be recalled that 6,000 Nigerian students in Sudan returned home before the war started in April 2023. In May 2023, the government evacuated a further 2,246 students from the Egyptian border and Port Sudan, according to the publication HumAngle.

    The state government had allocated NGN2.6 billion (about US$1.7 million) for admission, transport, registration and other logistics for the 194 students. He noted that the duration of their studies will vary, with some students completing their studies in two years, and others in three.
