India vs England 2024 2nd Test: Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav star as hosts take 143-run lead

India vs England 2nd Test 2024: Led by Jasprit Bumrah's 6 for 45, the hosts took a 143-run lead at Visakhapatnam.

Jasprit Bumrah produced a magical spell of 6 for 45 to help bowl England out for 253 runs and help India take a lead of 143 runs.

When India were dismissed for 396 runs in their first innings on the back of a superlative 209 from opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, many felt that the hosts had put up a below-par score on the board on a flat surface at Visakhapatnam.

Those doubts were proving to be right when England raced their way to 114-1 with Zak Crawley leading the charge. With the pitch showing no signs of prodigious turn, it looked like India might have a lot of leather chasing to do right through the day.

However when Crawley fell to Axar Patel for 76, caught superbly by Shreyas Iyer, it gave India the opening they needed to get back into the match.

Enter Jasprit Bumrah. The 30-year-old, who is playing his first home Test series since 2022, ripped the heart out of the England batting line-up by removing Joe Root (5), Ollie Pope (23), Jonny Bairstow (25) and captain Ben Stokes (47) to put the hosts into the ascendancy.

The ball to dismiss Pope-the maker of arguably the finest innings by an overseas batter in India in the last decade at Hyderabad- would be remembered for many years to come.

A searing yorker that took the middle-stump and leg-stump out of the ground, much to the delight of his teammates and the supporters watching the proceedings.

No England batter ever felt set with Bumrah bowling the way he was and he was well supported by Kuldeep Yadav-playing his first Test match since December 2022- who claimed figures of 3 for 71, that included the wicket of wicket-keeper Ben Foakes for 6.

The duo's performance helped India take a lead for the second time in the series and ensured that 396 runs in the first innings proved to be a more than a sizeable total in their first innings.

Brief scores: India 396 all out and 28 for no loss vs England 253 all out (Crawley 76, Stokes 47; Bumrah 6-45).
