Rani Kapur alleges 'coercion' after son Sunjay Kapur's death: All you need to know

While Rani Kapur didn’t take any names, reports claimed that she directed her accusations towards Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, who took over as a non-executive director at the company after her husband’s demise.

Weeks after the sudden demise of Sona BLW's Chairman Sunjay Kapur, mother Rani Kapur has shot a letter to the board, alleging that she was 'coerced' into signing documents behind locked doors, and that some people were trying to usurp Kapur family's legacy.

Sunjay Kapur passed away at 53 on June 12 after suffering a heart attack in the UK while he was playing polo. In a letter to the board of Sona BLW, Rani Kapur called her son's untimely death as 'highly suspicious'.

    Who is Rani Kapur?

The widow of late Surinder Kapur, founder of Sona Group, who was instrumental in setting up India's auto component industry after Japanese auto maker Suzuki Motor decided to locally make its small car, Maruti 800, back in 1983.

After Surinder Kapur's death, son Sunjay Kapur took over as the Managing Director of Sona BLW Precision Forgings. Rani Kapur served as the Chairperson of the company and the sole beneficiary of Surinder Kapur's estate, according to her letter. She cited in the letter that she is the largest shareholder of the Sona Group, including the titular company.

According to the latest data on Sona BLW's shareholding pattern, Rani Kapur and the RK family trust is a promoter group to the company, and she owns 72 shares in the company.

Who represents Kapur family at the board?

In her letter cited by CNBC-TV18, Rani Kapur mentioned that a resolution to nominate a director as the representative of the Kapur family is set to be taken up at the AGM. "I am fully convinced that the documents which were executed by me under coercion and duress, post the demise of my son, at a time of mental and emotional vulnerability are being misused," she wrote.

"For the record, I state that I have not given any consent or officially nominated any person to come on the Board of the Company or any other Sona Group Company after my son’s demise or given any consent to any person to represent me in any capacity before the Company and or any other Sona Group Company," she added.

She alleged that while the family was still in mourning, some people took it as an opportune time to wrest control and usurp the family legacy.

While she didn’t take any names, some news reports suggest that Rani was referring to Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, who took over as a non-executive director at the company after her husband’s demise.

"I reiterate, no one has the right currently, unless nominated by me to represent the Sona groups interest in the Company. Highly unsettling facts are coming to light and for the sake of the Company and the family it is imperative that no decisions are taken tomorrow," Rani Kapur added.

    Other key allegations:

Rani Kapur highlighted that the sudden demise of her son was 'highly suspicious'. "As you are aware, on 12.06.2025, my son Mr. Sunjay Kapur tragically passed away under highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances in the United Kingdom. Despite me seeking information, I have been unable to receive any relevant answers and documents explaining the incident and have been confined to the knowledge and version set out by the media," she wrote in her letter.

She also alleged several gross illegalities that have taken place at the company. "I have also been provided with certain information in the past couple of days from certain well wishers which leaves me very disturbed with respect to how things have transpired not just with respect to the family but also the Company and the legacy of my late husband," she said.

"At this stage, I wish not to dilate any further on the various gross illegalities which have surfaced except to state in no uncertain terms that it is imperative that no decisions are taken without my affirmative consent that could even slightly affect the role, responsibly and participation of the Sona group and family in Sona Comstar," she added.

She demanded that Sona BLW postpones the AGM by at least two weeks. However, the company has now proceeded with the AGM.
