RBI rolls out digital makeover for Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts

The Reserve Bank of India has announced that Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts will now include digital banking services like mobile and internet banking.

Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA) accounts do not require a minimum balance.

The banking services available to Basic Savings Bank Deposit account holders, who don’t have to worry about maintaining any minimum balance, will be broadened to include digital banking such as mobile and internet banking.

The RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra proposed to expand during his monetary policy announcement on October 1. This move aims to provide account holders with convenient and accessible banking services, enabling them to manage their finances more efficiently. It is a significant step towards enhancing financial inclusion in India.

Key Features of Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts

Zero minimum balance requirement

BSBDA accounts do not require a minimum balance, making them accessible to a wider range of individuals.

Free debit card facilities

Account holders receive a debit card without any annual maintenance charges for the first year.

Digital banking services

Mobile and internet banking services will enable account holders to perform transactions, check balances, and manage their accounts remotely.

Limited free withdrawals

Account holders have a limited number of free withdrawals per month, including ATM withdrawals.

Eligibility Criteria

Any individual, regardless of financial status, can open a BSBDA, either singly or jointly. This account is designed to promote financial inclusion, offering essential banking services without requiring a minimum balance. Minors above 10 years old are also eligible to open a BSBDA account, but they must do so under the guidance of a parent or guardian. Additionally, visually impaired and illiterate individuals can open a BSBDA account with necessary safeguards in place.
