The benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices are expected to open flat on May 22, following GIFT Nifty trends indicating a gain of 14 points for the broader index.

On May 21, the Indian markets ended almost flat in a volatile session with Nifty managing to hold above 22,500. Among sectors, the metal index was up four percent, the power index gained two percent, PSU Bank index rose 1.5 percent, while FMCG was down 0.5 percent.

The BSE midcap index was up 0.3 percent while the smallcap index fell 0.2 percent.

The GIFT Nifty is trading 14.5 points higher compared to the Nifty 50 close on May 21, indicating a flat to positive opening for the day. Nifty futures were trading at 22,632.50 at 07:00 am IST.

Asian Equities (Mostly Lower)

Asian indices were trading mostly lower in the early trade on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei index was down 0.6 percent at open and Topix was down 0.4 percent. South Korea’s Kospi was down 0.2 percent, while Taiwan index was up 0.4 percent. At 07:15 am IST, Asian indices were trading as follows (change from the previous close, MTD, YTD):

US Equities (Gain)

Wall Street ended modestly higher and U.S. Treasury yields dipped on Tuesday amid the doldrums ahead of a holiday weekend and a lack of substantial market catalysts.

All three major U.S. indexes advanced and the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached all-time closing highs in advance of Nvidia Corp's quarterly results and in anticipation of the release of the minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve's most recent monetary policy meeting, both expected on Wednesday. US Bond Yield (Gains)

The US 10-year Treasury yields were trading with a gain of 4.41 percent in the early trade, while the US 2-year bond yield was also trading higher at 4.83 percent. (current close, month ago, year to date ago actual):

US 10-Year Treasury 4.41%; 4.67%; 3.88%

US 2-Year Treasury 4.83%; 5.04%; 4.25%

Dollar Index (Flat)

The dollar was steady against a handful of peers on Wednesday, as the market assessed calls for patience from Federal Reserve officials and awaited the publication of Fed minutes for more insight on the central bank's path. (change from previous close, MTD, YTD):

Crude (Down)

Oil prices fell for a third straight session on Wednesday on expectations the Federal Reserve could keep U.S. interest rates higher for longer due to sustained inflation, potentially impacting fuel use in the world's largest oil consumer. (change from previous close, MTD, YTD):

Foreign institutional investors extended their selling on May 21 as they sold Indian equities worth Rs 1,874.54 crore. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors bought Rs 3,548.97 crore worth of equities on the same day.
