India’s western and southern regions contributed around 54 percent to the total deposits of the country of schedule commercial banks as of March 31, 2025, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Handbook of Statistics on Indian States 2024-25.
In 2025, the total deposits of the banking sector stood at Rs 234.52 lakh crore. Of the total, Rs 66.45 lakh crore is from Western region and Rs 56.78 lakh crore is from 56.78 lakh crore.
The major contributor to the western region for the deposits is Maharashtra, from where the deposits stands at Rs 52.34 lakh crore, followed by Rs 12.73 lakh crore from Gujarat.
Among the southern region, Karnataka’s contribution to total deposit stood at Rs 18.89 lakh crore in 2025, followed by Rs 14.63 lakh crore from Tamil Nadu.
On the credit front too, Southern and Western regions received more credit from banks in 2025.
As per data, credit by banks to southern region stood at Rs 56.7 lakh crore in 2025, of this, major share has been given to Tamil Nadu of Rs 17.62 lakh crore, followed by Karnataka of Rs 13.72 lakh crore, and Telangana of Rs 10.46 lakh crore.
In western region, Maharashtra have received a credit from banks of Rs 44.83 lakh crore in 2025, which is not only highest in western region, but also among all the states in India.
