Eminent jurist Fali S Nariman passes away at 95

Fali Nariman News LIVE: The veteran jurist was awarded the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.

Eminent constitutional jurist and veteran senior advocate of the Supreme Court Fali S Nariman passed away in New Delhi on February 21. He was 95.

Nariman was a fierce votary of civil liberties. He was an important public voice whose critical opinions about judicial developments carried much weight.

A distinguished constitutional lawyer, Nariman has argued several landmark cases, including the famous NJAC verdict.

In November 1950, Nariman became an advocate of the Bombay High Court, later earning the designation of senior advocate in 1961.

With over 70 years of legal practice, he initially worked in the High Court of Bombay before shifting to Delhi in 1972 to practice in the Supreme Court of India. Additionally, he served as Additional Solicitor General of India from May 1972 onwards, following his move from Bombay to Delhi.

Senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed his anguish over Fali Nariman's death, calling it "end of an era".

"End of an era-#falinariman passes away, a living legend who wl forever be in hearts &minds of those in law &public life. Above all his diverse achievements, he stuck to his principles unwaveringly &called a spade a spade, a quality shared by his brilliant son," Mr Singhvi wrote on X.

His autobiography "Before Memory Fades" is a widely read book, especially among law students and young lawyers, acting as a source of inspiration for them. "The State of Nation", "God Save the Hon'ble Supreme Court" are his other books.
