India was ahead of the world in launching 5G services across the country and hopes to develop and release 6G before anyone else, said Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal at the SHRM India Annual Conference 2024 on October 18.

“Those days where we were following the rest of the world is changing, we are leading the world in many areas including 6G,” the minister noted highlighting that India was behind other nations in launch of 3G and 4G services.

Goyal also noted that the country was hoping to become the third largest economy within the next three years.

“We are now the envy of the world. Entire world wants to do business with India and expand economic relations with India. They are looking at Indian skills to power their economy,” Goyal said.

Indian economy is likely to be the world's fastest growing economy in FY25 as well, with the country expected to log 7 percent growth, as per the IMF and the World Bank.

Goyal also remarked that India was way ahead in developing sustainable solutions for the world, despite the fact that India’s contribution to the emissions was low compared to its size.

“We have chosen to be part of sustainability solution, even though we are not part of that problem,” the commerce minister noted highlighting that India has achieved its commitments at the Paris conference eight years ahead of schedule.

The government now plans to increase the share of renewable energy in installed capacity to 500 GW.

Meanwhile, the minister said that reliance on green energy is likely to help reduce the import bill and take the country into an era of greater prosperity.

A recent Moneycontrol analysis had found that India would need to triple its annual renewable addition capacity to 50 GW to reach the target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.

The country at present has installed renewable capacity of 200 GW.
