India's textile industry can reach the size of $350 billion by 2030, and a roadmap has been prepared for it to generate 4-1/2 to 6 crore jobs, Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh said on September 27.
"The 100-day roadmap we have prepared includes (attracting) investment to the tune of lakhs of crores (in the textile sector) going forward," the minister said.
For the sector to reach this target from the present $165 billion, a wide-ranging blueprint is in the works. "To reach a size of $350 billion in the coming days, we need man-made fabric, whether it be synthetic, viscose or natural fibre, we are preparing for everything."
The Minister also set a target of 50,000 metric tonne production of silk, and employment for one crore people by 2030, adding that cultivation of silk generates employment for farmers.
Over 350 brands from world over currently procure clothes from India. The Centre also aims to achieve $100 billion worth of export for textile products by 2030.
Minister Singh played down the competition from some of the other Asian players who have ramped up their exports to corner a large share of the market. "I would like to state clearly that neither Bangladesh nor Vietnam was ever a challenge for me.... there is this havoc being created about Bangladesh (posing a challenge to India's textile industry," the minister added.
India's exports of textiles and apparel in FY24 fell 3.24% to $34.4 billion, as compared to $35.5 billion a year ago.
