The central government on November 18 rescinded the Quality Control Order (QCO) for Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) with immediate effect to address raw material accessibility and foster growth in the textile industry.

This move followed consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and key industry stakeholders and directly responds to persistent industry concerns about supply constraints and higher costs, according to a release by the government.

The statement added that this demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving ease of business for textile manufacturers, exporters, and MSMEs.

The decision is expected to help boost domestic consumption, meet the export target of US $100 billion, and grow the total textiles and apparel market to US $350 billion.

Removal of the QCO on VSF is expected to ensure seamless access to quality raw material, enhance global competitiveness, and drive industry-led growth to support these national objectives, the statement added.

“The Ministry of Textiles will continue to engage with stakeholders, prioritising evidence-based policies to sustain momentum for domestic manufacturing, exports, and job creation, paving the way for India’s emergence as a leading global textile hub,” the statement said.

This is in line with the Centre’s efforts to streamline QCOs. On November 12, the government withdrew 14 QCOs to enhance ease of doing business in textile, plastic, and chemical industries.
