Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1 said the government plans to raise the target for Lakhpati Didi schemes from 2 crore to 3 crore.

"Some 83 lakh self-help groups are transforming the rural landscape. They are an inspiration to others. Buoyed by their success, it has been decided to enhance the target for the Lakhpati Didi scheme from 2 crore to 3 crore, " Sitharaman said in her Interim Budget 2024-25 speech.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2023, said, "It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati didi in villages".
"When you go to a village, you will find 'bank-wali didi, Anganwadi didi and dawai-wali (medicine) didi. It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati didis in villages," he said.
Elaborating on the issue, a senior official told PTI in 2023 that the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme has been in place in some states and now the government is planning to train two crore women under it.
The official also said that women would be trained in skills like plumbing, LED bulb making, and operating and repairing drones among others.
The Prime Minister during his independence speech spoke about agri-tech and made a pitch for leveraging the potential of science and technology in rural development. The PM said that 15,000 Women’s Self-Help Groups would be given loan and training for operating and repairing drones. “Drone ki Udaan” will be carried out by these Women’s Self-Help Groups, said the PM.
