Why red is the colour of the season and how to style it for Indian weddings and festivals

Red has always held a special place in the Indian fashion palette. It is timeless, expressive, and deeply symbolic — a colour that has dressed generations of brides, dancers, and divas alike. Whether you wear it as a power suit, a draped saree, or a minimal kurta set, it’s a shade that will always make a statement

This season, its resurgence goes far beyond a passing trend; it captures a collective longing for joy and self-expression. After years dominated by soft neutrals and minimalism, red has made a powerful comeback as the colour of confidence, strength, and celebration. Whether you’re dressing for a mehendi brunch, an evening cocktail, or a wedding soiree, red adapts beautifully to every mood.

Once synonymous only with bridal wear, red is now finding its way into every corner of the festive wardrobe. Its resurgence reflects a collective desire for self-expression after years of subtle, muted tones. From deep vermillion to soft coral, red continues to define celebration and individuality.

As Shraddha Bindra, Creative Director of fashion label Biba, puts it, “After seasons of minimalism, women are once again embracing bold, joyful expression, and red embodies exactly that: confidence, strength, and celebration. We see red as the colour of self-assurance, powerful yet versatile. It shines just as beautifully in a traditional kurta set as in a fusion co-ord or an evening dress. With the festive and wedding season around the corner, Indian women are drawn to red because it bridges tradition and modernity, feeling rooted yet contemporary and perfectly reflecting today’s dual lifestyle.”

Modern interpretations of a classic colour:

Today’s Indian woman is reimagining red on her own terms. It’s no longer just for weddings or religious ceremonies — it’s a statement of confidence and creativity. From silk sarees and lehengas to breezy linen co-ords, red has evolved into an all-occasion hue. It’s about finding your version of the shade — whether through subtle crimson embroidery or a head-turning ruby dress.

Younger women are experimenting with unconventional silhouettes, pairing bold reds with modern textures and relaxed tailoring. Bindra notes, “The key lies in balance and styling. Pairing a red kurta with neutral palazzos, layering a red tunic with a denim jacket, or choosing a red co-ord with subtle gold detailing instantly makes the look chic and wearable. Our fusion wear and workwear lines feature playful shades of red that transition seamlessly from day to evening. Even for parties, lighter fabrics, clean silhouettes, and modern prints allow red to feel fresh and fashion-forward rather than traditional. It is all about infusing the colour with ease and personality, making it less about occasion and more about expression.”

How to style red right:

Red naturally commands attention, so styling it requires a thoughtful approach. The idea is to complement the vibrance rather than compete with it. Bindra shares her golden rules, “For jewellery, minimalist gold or antique accents work beautifully with ethnic wear, while sleek metallics or pearls elevate contemporary looks. In terms of makeup, neutral tones with a hint of kohl or a soft nude lip balance the warmth of red effortlessly. However, for an evening look, a bold red lip against a softer red outfit can be incredibly powerful. When it comes to footwear, nude, beige, or metallic tones are timeless choices that elongate the silhouette without drawing attention away from the ensemble. For festive occasions, embroidered juttis or block heels with subtle embellishments complete the look perfectly.”
