As Gen Z becomes a dominant force in the workforce, office design is evolving to reflect their values, aesthetics, and work preferences. A key element of this transformation is colour, a crucial factor that influences mood, productivity, and creativity.

Unlike traditional corporate hues, Gen Z prefers bold, expressive, and well-balanced colour palettes that inspire energy and engagement, says Kunal Sharma, Founder & CEO of Flipspaces, Mumbai, “Choosing the right colours for modern workspaces is essential in creating an environment where young professionals feel motivated and connected. The new generation gravitates towards colour schemes that are dynamic and memorable, rather than the neutral, muted tones,” he adds.

Vibrant and carefully curated colour palettes can boost creativity, focus, and promote a sense of belonging, making the workplace functional and also emotionally engaging, he explains.

Sharma shares the modern day colour preferences and latest trends:

  • Energising brights: Shades like electric blue, vivid coral, and mustard yellow bring energy and excitement to the workplace. These bold colours encourage creativity and positive interactions, making them ideal for brainstorming areas and collaborative spaces.

  • Calming neutrals with earthy undertones: A balanced mix of light beige, sage green, and warm taupe creates a grounding effect, reducing stress and improving focus. These colours work well in workstations and relaxation zones, fostering a sense of calm.

  • Tech-worthy shades: Digital lavender, neon teal, and reflective silver reflect Gen Z’s deep connection with technology and innovation. These futuristic colours suit innovation labs and high-tech office environments, reinforcing a forward-thinking atmosphere.

  • Biophilic greens: Inspired by nature, shades like forest green and moss support mental clarity and well-being while aligning with Gen Z’s sustainability values. These colours integrate seamlessly with natural elements, reinforcing eco-conscious office design.

Strategic use of colour in the workplace:

To create a visually stimulating yet harmonious office, companies can strategically apply colour throughout the workspace:

  • Bright, energising hues can be used for accent walls, furniture, and creative zones to spark motivation.
  • Neutral, calming tones should dominate workstations and focus areas to enhance productivity.
  • Tech-inspired colours can highlight digital collaboration spaces, keeping the design aligned with Gen Z’s digital-first mindset.
  • Biophilic greens can be incorporated through wall colours, plants, and sustainable materials to promote a connection with nature.
