If you ask a makeup enthusiast, they’ll tell you, lipstick isn’t just makeup, it’s a mood, a statement, and an extension of personal style. Therefore, the same does not work from morning to night. Not always. It is important to choose the right lipstick as it can improve your features, match the time of day, and complement your outfit effortlessly.

While soft, fresh shades tend to work best for daytime, evening looks often call for deeper, bolder hues, says Aayushi Trivedi, Founder Lyoux Cosmetics. And choosing the right colour is about understanding your skin tone, the occasion, and even the season. “Lipstick trends evolve with time, influenced by fashion, pop culture, and seasonal shifts. There was a time when matte reds dominated night looks, but now, glossy finishes and unconventional shades like deep berry or brown are making their way into evening glam,” she says, adding, “Daytime lipsticks, on the other hand, have moved beyond the classic pinks and nudes to include sheer tints and balmy textures for a more effortless feel.”

If you’re wondering which shades to pick for different times of the day, Trivedi shares effective tips that you can follow:

Best lipstick shades for daytime: When the sun’s out, your makeup should feel fresh and natural. Think soft, lightweight formulas in colours that boost your natural lip tone.

Nudes that flatter your skin tone: A nude lipstick is a classic daytime choice, but picking the right shade is key. The wrong nude can wash you out, while the right one can make your complexion glow. “Choosing the right nude lipstick depends on your skin tone. For fair skin, soft pink or peach-based nudes add a natural flush without washing you out. Medium skin tones look best with warm caramel or beige nudes that enhance warmth. Deep skin tones can opt for rich brown or deep peach nudes for a bold yet natural finish,” she says.

Soft pinks for a natural flush: A swipe of soft pink lipstick gives a fresh, effortless vibe. Whether it's a delicate rosy pink or a light coral hue, this shade amps up your lips without overpowering your look.

Peach and coral for a sun-kissed effect: Peach and coral tones brighten up your face instantly. Perfect for spring and summer, they bring a touch of warmth to your style.

Mauve and berry tints for a subtle statement: If you want a bit more depth without going too bold, muted mauves and berry tints strike the right balance. They offer a polished look that transitions well from day to evening.

Best lipstick shades for nighttime:

When the sun sets, it’s time to go bold. Evening looks call for richer, deeper shades that make a statement.

Classic red for timeless elegance: A red lip is a foolproof choice for a night out. It’s powerful, sophisticated, and instantly elevates any outfit. “Red lipstick is a timeless classic, but the key to making it work lies in choosing the right undertone. If you have cool undertones, blue-based reds create a striking contrast and brighten your complexion. Warm undertones pair beautifully with orange or brick reds, adding warmth and vibrancy. Those with neutral undertones can confidently wear true reds, which offer a balanced and universally flattering look. It’s all about finding the right undertone that complements your skin,” says Trivedi.

Deep burgundy and wine shades for drama: Burgundy and wine-colored lipsticks bring depth and richness, making them ideal for formal events, dinner dates, or a night out.

Bold berry and plum for an edgy look: Berry and plum tones create a bold, sultry vibe. These shades are particularly popular during fall and winter, adding a touch of mystery to your evening makeup.

Rich browns for a modern twist: Deep brown shades, whether dark chocolate or warm mocha, are a stylish alternative to red. They complement deeper skin tones beautifully and add an edgy, contemporary feel.

Seasonal shifts: how weather impacts lipstick choices:

Lipstick preferences also change with the seasons. In warmer months, people gravitate toward sheer, lightweight formulas, while cooler months call for richer, hydrating lipsticks. “In summer, glosses and satin finishes are more popular because they feel comfortable and fresh. During winter, matte and velvety textures take over since they add a cozy, polished touch to your look,” says Trivedi.
