As rain pours outside, your home may become vulnerable to unseen dangers that can lead to devastating consequences. Electrical accidents during the monsoon range from minor shocks to severe fires, highlighting the critical need for precautionary measures to ensure safety and prevent potential disasters.

During this season, electrical accidents become more prevalent due to factors such as water entering electrical fittings, increased humidity causing insulation deterioration, and lightning strikes. These conditions can lead to short circuits, fires from overloaded circuits, electric shocks from exposed wires, and malfunctioning appliances due to dampness.

Avoid shocks: Regularly inspect electrical appliances for signs of wear, damage, or exposed wires. Faulty appliances are a leading cause of electrical accidents. Replace or repair damaged items promptly to prevent shocks and potential fires.

Protect with residual current devices (RCDs): Install RCDs (Residual Current Devices) or GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) in your home's electrical system. These devices quickly cut off power when they detect a fault, preventing electric shocks and reducing fire risks.

Do not mix water and electrical: Ensure electrical appliances, sockets, and switches are kept dry. Avoid using electrical equipment with wet hands or in wet conditions to minimise the risk of electric shocks and short circuits.

Shield with protectors: Use surge protectors to safeguard sensitive electronic devices from power surges caused by lightning strikes or electrical fluctuations during storms. This helps prevent damage to appliances and reduces fire hazards.

Weather-proof the outlets: Weatherproof outdoor electrical installations and securely mount them to prevent water ingress. Proper insulation and protection of cables and connections are vital to avoid weather-related electrical hazards.

Balance the load: Prevent circuit overloads by distributing the electrical load evenly across multiple outlets or using power strips with built-in overload protection. Overloaded circuits can overheat, leading to fires and electrical failures.

Schedule regular inspections: Regular maintenance of your home's electrical system by qualified electricians, is vital. They can identify potential hazards, ensure compliance with safety standards, and make necessary repairs to keep your home safe during the monsoon season.
