It seems controversies continue to hound the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO), as Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, who was crowned this year, disclosed on Instagram that she was being attacked from all corners. Many felt she was undeserving of the win, and that other contestants were more worthy.
For the unversed, a change in leadership within the Miss Universe Organisation this year caused political strife, exposing long-standing cracks. Just a few days ahead of the competition, Bosch walked out of the venue along with other contestants after she was called a “dumbhead” by pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil.
While she garnered support from all over the world for boldly standing up for herself, her victory didn’t go down well with some. Many felt the MUO was only trying to compensate for the bad reputation it earned after insulting Bosch. Heated online debates took place, questioning her win.
It seems things have gotten out of hand, as Bosch took to Instagram to share her side of the story. “These are some of the messages I’ve received these past few days. What must be in a person’s heart for them to wish harm upon someone they don’t even know? Thank God my values and self-esteem are strong, and this doesn’t break me. But many people can be hurt by this kind of attack, and it can end up affecting their mental and emotional stability,” she wrote.
She added that she is raising her voice not as a beauty queen but as a woman, who has faced violence born from hatred, misinformation, and the inability of some to see a woman shine without feeling threatened.
“In the last few days, I have received insults, attacks, and even death wishes for one single reason: because I won. Because a woman with dreams, preparation, and heart decided to stand up and fight for what she loves. And although these attacks hurt, they do not define me. What does define me is my strength, my integrity, and the love I have for my country and for the women around the world whom I represent,” she said in her statement.
Fatima clarified that the violence coming her way, in the form of digital attacks, mockery, and campaigns targeted at her dignity, won’t stop her, as it’s not just about her anymore but about the millions she represents. She added that her victory is a reminder that “women are resilient, capable, and powerful,” and that she won’t remain silent but will use the opportunity she has been granted to make other women seen and heard.
While she shared her resolve to continue to shine and transform the world despite the hate and vile attacks, she did not forget to thank those who have stood by her. “Your light sustains me. Your trust lifts me. Your affection reminds me that I am not alone,” she said. In the end, she also reaffirmed her commitment to defending women and representing them to the best of her abilities.
Even MUO National Director Nikhil Anand supported Fatima Bosch in his newly released statement, urging the audience to lend their unwavering support to her for her “dedication and poise.” He also addressed the differences with MUO and how they have taken all critical feedback into account for its betterment.
