Matcha tea review goes viral: Content creator calls it ‘mouldy tea’ while Sara Tendulkar swears by it in her smoothie

While the internet may be obsessed with matcha tea for its aesthetic appeal and nutritional benefits, content creator Pranjali Papnai recently posted a quick reel where she disappointed matcha lovers by calling it a ‘fafundi wali chai.’

Matcha tea has caught the fancy of many online. The green drink packs a punch when it comes to antioxidants and is known to improve cognitive function and cardio-metabolic health. While it boasts several health benefits, its aesthetic beauty gets more credit on Pinterest and Instagram than its taste. There are many who enjoy its flavour, but some don’t — and in the latter category falls content creator Pranjali, who recently reviewed the drink on Instagram.

She started the video by sharing that her matcha was ready for a taste test. But as soon as she took a sip, she declared, “It tastes like normal tea but one with mould.” Her experience got worse as she drank more and eventually stopped.

While at it, Pranjali experimented with ice and milk as recommended on the packaging to give the drink a fair chance. However, none of it worked. She found the drink too cold with ice, and milk didn’t save the taste either. She finally added jaggery, which also failed, leading her to quit the trial.

The content creator ended the review by joking, “If you also want me to review Bapcha, let me know.” She also made a face while drinking the tea and added, “I've paid a lot for this.”

Many reacted to her video, with some finding it quite relatable. One wrote, “Matcha is one of the things that cannot be fixed no matter what.” Another commented, “I have seen so many matcha reviews, but this was by far the best review.” A third added, “Those expressions are killing me.”

There were also several who pointed out that she hadn’t prepared it the right way. One suggested using condensed milk, while many others recommended places where she could try a proper matcha drink.

While Pranjali may not have given it a thumbs-up, celebrities like Sara Tendulkar have been enjoying the delicious, nutritious drink in smoothie form.

Sara shared a video on Instagram where she dived right into the recipe, stating upfront that just one cup of matcha will help you “sip your skincare and fuel your muscles.” She added all the ingredients at once, listing their quantities in the caption.

In the caption, Sara wrote: “Over 30 grams of protein, with matcha and skincare benefits? Sounds like a dream to me. Ingredients: 1–2 pitted dates, 1 scoop vanilla protein, 1 scoop collagen peptides, 1 tsp matcha powder, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1–2 tbsp unsweetened almond butter, ice, ice baby & it tastes like a hug from a Japanese café.”
