How many times have you reached for your favourite cosmetic product only to realise it's past its expiration date? Still, the temptation to use it "just one more time" is strong, especially if you’re not ready to toss it or spend more money on a new product. But while it might seem harmless, using expired cosmetic products can have serious consequences.

You may not want to get rid of the product be it due to attachment to a favourite mascara or simply the desire to avoid waste, keeping expired cosmetics is more common than you might think. If you, like many out there,  are reluctant to throw away your makeup once it’s expired., know that it can cause harm. Expired makeup can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and other pathogens, posing significant risks to your skin and health.

A study published in PubMed reveals that many women continue to use makeup beyond its expiry date, often without realising the potential dangers. These outdated products are frequently contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms, which can lead to a variety of skin issues and infections.

Here are 5 strong reasons why you should never use expired cosmetic products:

Bacteria buildup: As makeup ages, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Once the preservatives in the product break down, bacteria can multiply rapidly. Applying bacteria-laden makeup to your skin can lead to infections, breakouts, and other skin problems.

Skin irritation: Expired cosmetics often lose their effectiveness and can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Ingredients that were once beneficial can degrade over time, leading to redness, itching, and discomfort when applied to your skin.

Reduced efficacy: The active ingredients in cosmetics, such as SPF in sunscreen or anti-aging agents in creams, can lose their potency after expiration. This means that not only are you exposing your skin to potential harm, but the product is also no longer delivering the expected benefits.

Eye infections: Using expired eye makeup, such as mascara or eyeliner, is particularly risky. The eyes are highly sensitive, and bacteria from expired products can easily cause infections like conjunctivitis, which can be painful and difficult to treat.

Unpleasant odour and texture: Expired cosmetics often develop an unpleasant smell and a change in texture, which shows that the product has gone bad. This is a sign that the ingredients have deteriorated and are no longer safe to use.
