Celebrated on March 8 every year, International Women's Day is a global celebration that marks the achievements of women across various sectors, including cultural, economic, political and social fields. From small gatherings to award functions, global marches and awareness campaigns, this day reminds us of the power of women and their contribution to society.
First observed on February 28, 1909, in New York, the International Women’s Day (IWO) was organised by the Socialist Party of America Women's Day. It was later proposed to be observed on March 8 at the 1910 International Woman's Conference. In 1917, the day became a national holiday in Soviet Russia after women there gained suffrage. Initially celebrated mainly by the socialist movement and communist countries, IWD was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

This year the International Women's Day theme is "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment". The theme focuses on the fundamental need for women and girls to have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources.
A much-needed call, it highlights the importance of ensuring that women and girls are treated equally in all areas, such as education, employment, and political participation, and have the freedom to make decisions that shape their lives. The theme advocates the importance of providing women and girls with the tools and support required to achieve their full potential, including access to healthcare, economic independence, and the ability to live free from violence.
